- Brush your teeth at least twice a day for at least 2 minutes each time.
- Use fluoridated toothpaste (kids use children’s toothpaste) about the size of a pea on your brush. Stay away from abrasive toothpastes. Common abrasives include calcium phosphates, alumina, calcium carbonate, and silica.
- Replace your toothbrush every three months, this includes electric toothbrush tips as well.
- Brush your tongue to remove bacteria and freshen your mouth.
- If you have trouble holding or using a toothbrush, invest in an electric toothbrush. Remember to let the bristles clean your teeth, not your muscles. DO NOT BRUSH HARD.
- On the outer and inner surfaces, brush your teeth at a 45-degree angle in short strokes against the gum line.
- On chewing surfaces, brush back and forth.
- For the front teeth, tilt brush vertically and use gentle up and down strokes with toe of brush to clean the inside portion of these teeth.
- Use Ultra Soft or Soft bristle heads for both electric and manual toothbrushes. Using medium or harder bristles may cause tooth abrasion (wearing away of tooth material) and/or gum recession.
